Seth E. Lerner, MD Director, The Prostate Program Seth E. Lerner, MD, a urologist specializing in urologic oncology, is the Director of the Dickstein Cancer Treatment Center Prostate Program. A graduate, Magna Cum Laude, of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, Dr. Lerner performed his post-graduate training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. He completed his training as a Fellow in Urologic Oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Lerner is also an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Urology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has received numerous awards throughout his career and has published over 40 peer reviewed articles and several book chapters in the field of Urologic Oncology.
Dr. Lerner is a consultant reviewer to several medical peer review journals including the "Journal of Urology", "The Mayo Clinic Proceedings" and "Urology". Dr Lerner was instrumental in introducing minimimally invasive robotic oncologic surgery to White Plains Hospital Center. In his career he has performed nearly 1000 radical prostatectomies. He has performed more robotic radical prostatectomies utilizing the da Vinci system than any other surgeon in the county as well as the surrounding counties and was the first surgeon in New York to utilize the da Vinici S surgical system (the most advanced robotic surgical system now available).
"With the 3-D magnified view, I am more able to precisely identify and preserve the delicate structures that surround the prostate. This includes the sphincter muscles, which are responsible for urinary control, plus nerves and blood vessels, which are responsible for potency during the curative cancer operation. The same principles that I have used for years during standard open nerve sparing (for the preservation of sexual function) radical prostatectomy are applied to the robotic surgery. The da Vinci system is not a replacement for surgical skill and experience or extensive knowledge and understanding of pelvic anatomy. It is merely another tool such as an advanced scalpel and microscope that I can use to perform radical prostatectomy while maintaining the patient's quality of life." In addition, to his extensive experience with prostate cancer surgery Dr Lerner also performs minimally invasive surgical procedures for kidney cancer (including laparoscopic nephrectomy, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy), for benign (pheochromocytoma, Conns syndrome) and malignant adrenal gland (adrenal cortical carcinoma) conditions, for bladder cancer, and testicular cancer.
Dr Lerner is a member of the American Urological Association, The American Association of Clinical Urologists and the New York Section American Urological Association, and the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.
